The Foundation
Our Mission Statement
The mission of the American Epilepsy Outreach Foundation is to raise the public’s awareness of Epilepsy through advocacy and education, as well as provide support for those living with Epilepsy and their families. We strive to eliminate the stigma and dispel the myths surrounding Epilepsy. The American Epilepsy Outreach Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The Butterfly Effect
Our logo has been selected to symbolize the butterfly effect. This concept refers to the idea that a butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that can ultimately cause a tornado to appear (or prevent a tornado from appearing). The flapping wings represent a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale phenomena. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different.
Epilepsy is very delicate, like a butterfly. Seizures can be the result of the slightest change. The slightest misfire in the brain can cause devastating results for the individual and everyone around them. As seizures continue, life gets more chaotic at home, in the work place, school…thus the butterfly effect.
